If we want to understand how our society operates, then we must not only study the characteristics of individuals and organizations but specifically examine the interactions within various social networks. In his inaugural lecture, Professor Dr. Eelke Heemskerk demonstrates that through collaboration between scientific disciplines and through new, extensive datasets, we can finally unravel how social networks amplify the power and opportunities of some while diminishing those of others.

Your position in social networks, according to Heemskerk, greatly influences the opportunities you have (or lack) and the power you can (or cannot) exert. This provides new insights into key societal issues surrounding inequality, political behavior, the role of elites, and responsible entrepreneurship. Heemskerk emphasizes the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration in research and education.

When we shape this collaboration effectively, it can foster a new and productive interaction between data, theory, and methods that aids us in solving societal problems. This requires an open-minded approach, investment in interdisciplinarity, and new digital infrastructure for research and education.
